Therapeutic Ultrasound

What is it? Ultrasound therapy uses very high frequency sound waves to stimulate the connective tissues beneath the skin. These sound waves are absorbed primarily by connective tissues such as ligaments, tendons, and fascia.  Ultrasound is applied using a transducer or applicator that is in direct contact with the patient's skin. Gel is used on all surfaces of the head to reduce friction and assist transmission of the ultrasonic waves to the treated tissues beneath the skin.

How does it feel? When being treated with ultrasound, the patient will usually feel a warming sensation, and potentially a very slight feeling of vibration.

Benefits: Ultrasound therapy works to speed up the healing process by increasing blood flow to the treated area. During treatment with ultrasound, cell membranes are stimulated in a way that appears to enhance the cell-repair effects of the inflammatory response. In turn, pain is therefore decreased, the healing process can occur, and function can be restored quicker.
